The filmmaker Paul Haggis testified in a rape case against him on Wednesday,

but he did not immediately address the allegations of sexual assault made by five witnesses.

Instead, the Academy Award-winning writer and director focused on his protracted conflict

with the Church of Scientology to start what could be days of testimony.

Despite the fact that only one of Haggis' accusers is suing,

Haggis' attorneys have been attempting to imply that the lawsuit may be the result of a Scientology scheme against him.

However, they haven't offered any concrete evidence of this claim.

The church and her attorneys both dismiss the argument as a false conspiracy theory.

Although he was anxious, Haggis claimed he was "really thrilled" to testify.

He told the jury, "I've been unable to clear my name for five years, but now I will.
