Michael J. Fox still remembers one particular incident after so many years.

The retired actor talked about his surprise experience with Southern hospitality thanks to the late River Phoenix as part of PEOPLE's most recent cover story.

The incident in question happened when Fox, 61, was filming Doc Hollywood in a small Florida town in 1991.

Fox remembers that River would take them out because "River Phoenix and his brother [Joaquin Phoenix] owned a home there.

"He used to come and pick us up before driving us to his house where a BBQ would be held.

It's amusing because that act of compassion was constructed upon another act of kindness."

In a previous episode, River, who passed away at the age of 23 in 1993 from a combination of drug intoxication, made a cameo appearance.
