The highly anticipated matchup between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev

with the lightweight championship on the line, took place in the main event of UFC 280.

The fight served as a sort of stand-in for Oliveira vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov, a dream matchup for many MMA fans

After Khabib announced his retirement in 2020, Oliveira became the undisputed champion in the 155-pound weight class.

The closest fight fans would get to their ideal match-up was Oliveira vs. Makhachev because "The Eagle" had repeatedly stated that he wanted to stay retired.

It was also a strong team because each man had won more than ten fights in a row prior to the evening.

All that without even taking into account Oliveira's apparent attempt to reclaim the championship he previously held.

Makhachev then made himself comfortable and started working behind Charles Oliveira's closed guard.

Soon there would be a scuffle, with Oliveira pushing Makhachev up against the fence with his back to them.

While the fight was mostly being fought on the mat through the first round, Makhachev was getting plenty of top time.
